Verruca Treatments

A verrucae/wart is caused the Human Papilloma virus (HPV), there are over 200 subtypes of the virus identified. The virus is usually contracted from other people and often where the virus can thrive in a moist warm place such as swimming pools and changing rooms. The warm moist environment which the virus prefers means our skin is the perfect host. Verrucae or warts can spontaneously resolve on their own but may take years and in the meantime can spread.

Many patients have what we term an immune ignorance, whereby a person’s immune system does not detect the virus. Podiatrists cannot determine if a patient will respond to verruca treatments and often what works for some does not work for others depending on how the immune system responds.

Treatment will vary depending on severity and size. A patients age will be a varying factor to the type of treatment a podiatrist recommends. Children are known to respond to less invasive treatments.

There are NO treatments for verruca that offer 100% success rate due to the virus being able ‘hide’ for an immune response to occur.

Verrutop verruca treatment

£45

15 mins

3-6 treatments recommended at 2 weeks apart

You will be required to have an initial consultation first to determine correct diagnosis.

If Verrutop is indicated to be the most suited treatment going forward treatment can then commence. Initially, the overlying hard skin on top of the verruca will be reduced with a scalpel, this is usually painless but may bleed sometimes, this is normal. After scalpel reduction, the Verrutop is then applied a few times and left to dry, again, this is usually painless but some individuals may report a slight stinging or burning sensation to the area which subsides that day.

How effective is it?

The manufacturers of Verrutop state that following clinical trials the efficacy rate is 90% following 6 applications of Verrutop. Although this is high, there is still no 100% guarantee the verruca will clear, which is the case for any verruca treatments

What are the benefits of Verrutop?

  • Quick and usually painless treatment

  • No need to keep foot dry after treatment

  • Can return to normal activities shortly after treatment

  • Eliminates risk of spreading verruca to others

Verrutop is not suitable for children under 6 years old

Verruca needling/Faulkners technique

You will be required to have an initial consultation first to determine correct diagnosis

This is a highly specialised treatment and Local analgesia is required whether this be a toe or ankle block. The area or foot will be numb and the verruca is punctured multiple times with a sterile needle. The purpose is infected cells are ruptures by the needle and the virus is then introduced into deeper layers of the skin where the body in rich in immune regulators. The major advantage of this type of treatment is that if an immune system response is initiated then the response is systemic.

Once needling has finished and the verruca has been treated it must be appropriately dressed with dressings and deflective padding to help offload the treated area. The patient is advised not to drive and rest for a few days.

The treated verruca will be sore for several days after treatment but will quickly settle down if patient has rested the area and kept wound clean and dressed (this will be discussed and instructions given by the Podiatrist). The wound will soon start to scab over. It is advised to have a follow-up appointment with the podiatrist a week later.

Clinical evidence has demonstrated verruca microneedling to be up to 80% effective, results may not be seen for some time after surgery, some cases have been 8 months. We recommend a review after 6 months and will be able to to advise you further. In some cases a second treatment has been required.

The price for treatment package includes:

  • Anaesthetic

  • Faulkner verruca needling

  • Dressing and padding on the day plus dressings for 2 applications after

  • 2 x review appointments (usually at 2 weeks and 8 weeks post op)
